MISSIONS

United Church
of Diagonal has, in the past, taken four designated offerings. They are:
One Great Hour of Sharing
Easter
Thanksgiving
Christmas

During August, we collect many school items needed by our local school children to be used as a supplement during the school term.

The last Sunday of August, we take an offering for the Child Saving Institute of Omaha, sponsored by the Disciples of Christ.

CROP Walk is annually held in Mount Ayr, usually at Poe Hollow Park on the first Sunday afternoon of October, in conjunction with our neighbor churches in the Ringgold County Ministerial Association. Darla Sobotka is our CROP Walk contact person.

We also help with school kits for In-Gathering on the first Sunday of November.

Our Christmas offering usually goes to Bidwell-Riverside Mission in Des Moines.
This mission was begun by the Methodist Church, but is now aided by all three of the denominations with which we are affiliated.

Beginning in early December, our church adopts a family who needs help with items for Christmas.
We all enjoy this project providing needed and fun gifts to our Christmas family.

After Christmas, we focus on our missionary family:

the Dan Campbell family, missionaries to Bolivia.

Dan last visited us at Christmas, 2003.
Dan & Regina keep us up to date on their activities and needs through The Campbell Chronicle, a newsletter they send us regularly.

In July, 2004, we received this message from Dan & Regina:
Thank you!  Thank you!
"As we prepare to return to Bolivia for another 4-year term, we want to thank everyone for the generous support and encouragement you have given!  We have been so humbled by the reception we have received at churches this year as well as the number of people who have gotten behind us to support this outreach to the Bolivians!  We have also been so excited at the interest everyone has taken in the vehicle project (even the Bolivian young people were excited to hear of the progress over the phone)!  We couldn't go to Bolivia as missionaries without you!  Only eternity will tell the number of people who have accepted the Lord as a result!"

God is at Work

When the Lord works, it is not always in our own way of thinking. Since arriving back in Bolivia in 2004, the Lord unexpectedly began using us to help raise up a church in the community of Villa Paraiso. We are amazed as the building begins.

We've also felt the Lord working in our lives as we have faced many personal challenges, mostly related to health. It is not always easy to understand the "whys", especially when it makes ministry very difficult, but we must still rest in the confidence that God is sovereign and in control.

Prayer Concerns and Requests

Over the past year, we've had to seek extra strentgh and endurance from the Lord for the physical difficulties that have continued to come our way. Thus, the majority of the prayer update below relates to our family, since that's the predominant thing we're facing. We're often overwhelmed, but are learning that the Lord can also use "negative things" in our lives to accomplish His purpose.

Little Davey -- We give special praise to the Lord for his intervention in Davey's life recently when he was hospitalized with rotavirus. We also thank the Lord that Davey's acid reflux has improved during the day. Special prayer is needed for the nights so that he can sleep. His inability to get the rest he needs due to the reflux makes it hard on everyone.

Our Family -- Sicknesses such as bronchitis, tonsilitis, bacterial infections, bad colds, etc., have been repeatedly hitting us. In fact, we've gone to the clinic so much that the receptionist knows most of our personal data by memory! Pray for a hedge of protection, so that we are able to operate normally as a family and as missionaries.

Dan -- Pray for guidance for Dan and a solution for his back as he pursues possible surgery for his herniated disk. Also, praise the Lord for testing that revealed the cause of Dan's sinus problems and headaches -- an allergy to eggs, dairy, adn wheat/gluten (the latter called "celiac disease"). A special diet is difficult, but has helped a lot!

Villa Paraiso Church -- In spite of the trials, we are excited to see the first walls of the church going up! Praise the Lord! Since we have one year left in our term here in Bolivia, pray that we will have the church finished by then (June, 2008).

Other News

Since our last letter, Regina's parents (Don & Brenda Rutledge), came to visit us here in Bolivia! Of course, the real reason they came was to see their grandsons! While they were here, we dedicated Davey to the Lord. Only God knows the plans he has for our boys.

Since we've been going through a tough year, not long ago we decided to focus on others by taking toys to an orphanage. The kids were excited to receive the toys provided by some of our relatives back home. Surprisingly, the Lord also used us to minister to the directors!

Davey's Illness Up-date

In April, we had a rather scary experience when Davey (8 months) was hospitalized a week with vomiting, severe diarrhea, and dehydration from rotavirus. After several days of being in a desperate state with no signs of improvement, many people and churches began to pray. In less than twelve (12) hours, he improved dramatically and was soon released from the hospital. The Lord truly healed him in response to everyone's prayers! We are thankful for our fellow missionaries that cared for Dan and Stephen who also had fever at home, as well as for the Bolivian girls who helped Regina take care of the baby during an extremely difficult week at the hospital.

Construction has begun on the Villa Paraiso Church!

Thank you so much for the financial gifts we received for church construction following our last newsletter! You enabled us to go quite far with the building. It is so wonderful to be holding services under a roof now!

We are building the bathrooms, the pastor's study, and a storeroom for the chairs and supplies first, as these are needed the most.

The next stage will be the construction of the walls for the sanctuary and Sunday School rooms!
Yes!
If you would like to help us do this, clip the coupon (on the newsletter at the back of the sanctuary there in Diagonal) and send to:

Teaching Update

This semester at the Bolivian Evangelical University, Dan is teaching Hebrews and the General Epistles. Since his students are preparing for the ministry, several have come to our Villa Paraiso church to preach, sing, or teach the kids.
Recently, the university held a career day. Dan and some of the students at the theology table used a a large termite mound as Mount Sinai!
Stephen visited the nutrition table while others saw what the nursing students have learned.
Bolivian Evangelical University offers sixteen (16) majors and has over 1400 students enrolled, but its main purpose remains to expose students to the Gospel.
